'Accessibility' is the term used to describe the compliance of a website to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
It is now a legal requirement for every company to ensure their website is compliant with a list of rules and technical guidelines laid down in the DDA.
The primary purpose of these rules is to ensure websites can be accessed using the wide variety of tools and equipment available to disabled website users to enhance their use of computers and the internet. One much-cited example is the use of screen readers by partially-sighted people - equipment that verbally reads aloud the text displayed on a website. If your website doesn't follow the DDA guidelines, chances are it's not fully compatible with such equipment - and by the letter of the law, you are therefore disciminating against such users.
This is only one example of accessibility compliance - the criteria for accessibility is laid down by the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) - and when choosing a company to provide your website, you must ensure that the sites they build are compliant to at least 'priority 1' level (adherence to the very basic level of DDA conformity).
